World Earth Day: 5 Easy Things You Can Do To Be More Sustainable
World Earth Day is a dedicated time to show support for environmental preservation, celebrating previous achievements, and raising awareness about the following steps. This year again, most of us might be stuck at home, but it's not a reason to not celebrate!
If you're one of those who'd like to make changes in their lives but don't know where to start: stick around. We're going to explore simple steps for your sustainable journey to begin while staying at home!
How to celebrate World Earth Day at home?
Usually, events should be happening all around the world, ranging from beach clean-up to tree planting sessions. But don't worry, you'll still be able to join many exciting digital events this year, including films, talks, lectures, and more.
Why do we honor Earth Day?
The theme of Earth Day 2021 is Restore Our Earth. A choice that sheds light on sustainability being no longer enough: our future lies in regenerating the planet.
As too much harm has been inflicted already on our environment, there is a pressing need to recreate natural processes by reforestation, soil regeneration, biodiversity restoration, etc.
In brief, it's about investing in restoring the world's ecosystem as nature has already the ability to heal itself.
In fact, the ocean absorbs CO₂ emissions and excessive heat caused by climate change, but unfortunately, marine ecosystems are dying due to human activity. The same goes with forests, the second-largest storehouse of carbon and greenhouse gases, which are disappearing at an alarming rate.
So this year's Earth Day is a call to collaborate around a more regenerative future. Where to start?
Easy steps to transition towards a more sustainable lifestyle
1# Reforest the planet with a simple click
Reforestation has never been so easy. By using the search engine Ecosia, you plant a tree for every search you do!
More than a bunch of trees, forests are vital ecosystems providing clean water, air, soil, food and regulating the climate. That's why reforestation is essential to preserve biodiversity on earth.
2# Start using Green Condoms
The majority of condoms contain harmful chemicals to the detriment of your health and the environment. Make an easy swap by trying our Green Condoms (and Fun lube). As we strive for transparency before anything else, you can have access to our list of ingredients at all times.
Using protection during sex remains an excellent (and accessible!) way to be earth-conscious. Exposing yourself unnecessarily to the risk of getting STIs? Definitely not eco-friendly. Stay at your best to accomplish great things!
It also makes sense to pause and think about when and if you want to have children. We experience less pressure than the previous generation in procreating, and we should use this freedom wisely. Do you really want kids, or is it something that you think you should want?
While it's not all that simple, overpopulation has a significant impact on the planet, particularly how we over-consume goods and natural resources.
3# Refuse plastic at all costs
Plastic pollution is one of the most severe issues we face today. It doesn't only harm the environment but also kills wildlife - 100,000 marine mammals and 1 million seabirds per year, to be exact. And more than that, it affects our health, as we unknowingly consume 5 grams of plastic weekly!
How to refuse single-use plastic?
Be aware of how much plastic you bring back home: start carrying your own bags to avoid getting plastic in shops
Choose dine-in over takeaways, or bring your own containers
Keep a refillable water bottle at all times with you
Reduce the amount of packaged products you buy, and instead, shop at markets, zero waste or bulk shops
4# Start composting at home
Guess what? Composting your kitchen is a direct way to contribute to soil health, and in the bigger picture, lower your carbon footprint.
A third of all food produced in the world is thrown away and releases a large amount of methane - 21 times more warming than CO₂ - because it doesn't decompose in landfills.
With composting, nothing goes wasted as it's turned into a valuable resource to enrich your soil or reduce your need for fertilizers.
After putting effort into buying and cooking only what you need, try to avoid putting food waste into the main trash. You can compost it in your yard, use a community compost service, and even indoor compost - either by buying or making a compost box.
5# Educate yourself!
Being at home can also be a hell of a productive time. Try to find some time every week to educate yourself on environmental issues and solutions!
Read a book: Braiding Sweetgrass teaches us how sustainability draws from the traditional practices of indigenous communities.
Listen to a podcast: Green Dreamer explores everything surrounding ecological regeneration and collective healing. Every episode is enlightening and shares multiple ways to be more conscious in our everyday life.
Follow someone inspiring: Nina Gualinga advocates for environmental and Indigenous rights in the Amazon rainforest. Supporting Indigenous communities is a direct way to contribute to nature conservation, as we have a lot to learn from their ancestral practices in being sustainable.
Join an online course: Guardians of the Forest is a course about traditional forest knowledge for ecological, cultural and spiritual transformation taught by 40 practitioners from 30 different countries.
Watch a documentary: Kiss the Ground and Soil Story. It's all about how soil regeneration has the power to stabilize the climate, restore ecosystems and provide an abundance of food.
Today, we wanted to offer a window into simple ways to incorporate conscious actions in your everyday life, because our smallest actions, all together, will lead us to a regenerative future ♥︎
Let's be honest: what is the first thought that comes to your mind when you hear about scheduling sex? Boring. Laborious. So-not-sexy. Yet, many sexologists swear by this practice to cultivate intimacy within a relationship.
